The most important
find in the museum is the famous cup. Nestor’s
Goblet (other objects are in showcase n. 23) was
imported from Rodi (the inventory number is
166788) and it was discovered in a cremation grave
in the necropolis. At Pithecusae an epigram was
engraved upon this cup. These three lines were
engraved in euboic alphabet and referred to the
famous Nestor’Goblet, described in “Iliad”.
"It
is good to drink from Nestor’s Goblet.
But who sips from this cup, Soon
he shall be caught by desire for the blond Aphrodite with her
beautiful crown".
The text is written in
retrograde direction, like the Phoenician writing.
The second and third lines are two hexameters. All the small
gaps are interpreted, but the second word in the first line
has four or five lacking letters.
