The Archaeological Museum and Excavations of Saint Restituta

Next to Saint Restituta Sanctuary there is "Archaelogical Excavations and Museum of Saint Restituta” complex, that is the typical example of excavation and archaeological areas, transformed in an independent museum. So it is an underground museum under the church, where there are many ancient cultures witnesses.
The museum is composed of two sections: the excavations and the museum.

The museum is archaeological and there are many crockeries of several ages.
They are important: Nymph Aretusa’s Head (IV century BC)  and Demetra’s Head (IV century BC).

The excavations started in 1951, thanks to Father Pietro Monti, the church rector. At last the excavations and the museum were arranged in 1974.
Into the museum the run allows to admire a comprehensive survey of the the Island of Ischia history: from the Prehistory until the Greek-Hellenistic-Roman period and the first Christianity.  They are important: the pottery from Campania and the architectonic terracottas.
Recently the Baptistry Room came to the
light. In the center of it there is the circular basin which is enclosed by a wall, raised from the marble floor and with three steps to enter in order to be baptized through the immersion. This discovery is very important, because it proves at Lacco Ameno there was the most important Christian complex of the island. Infact here in the middle of the V century Saint Restituta’s remains from Cartagine were kept.
